Following an earlier album and two EPs, the acclaimed 2004 'Purplene' LP was recorded at Chicago's Electrical Audio by Steve Albini and proved a significant departure for the band - a mature distillation of brooding experimental minimalism, abstract poetic imagery and cathartic release. Sputnik's review noted, "the record's greatest strength is its shunning of the excesses of the genres it takes its influence from." Members would go on to form Charge Group, Firekites and Palace of Fire.

The album was originally sequenced and mastered for vinyl, but only found a CD release (via Sydney label Spunk) while the band still existed. Then 14 years after disbanding, Purplene reformed in early 2018 for a run of east-coast shows to celebrate the release of 'Purplene' on vinyl for the very first time on Hobbledehoy Records.

Includes unlimited streaming of Purplene via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

lyrics

Swords down
Let's finally take stock of this
And reason with the monolith
Our campfire signals good tides
Ocean winds trading off the southern bluff

And warning that we're still here
To oversee the ragged-run and tiresome gentry
Who returned today to pillage more
With weapons drawn and overcoats flooding onto shore

Swords down
Throw in your towels and head out to sea
Good men are we of charity
Let's bargain with ancient whales
Setting sail back centuries with peace decrees

And pledging our hearts and bones to better homes
It's better said than left alone
To fester like scurvied gums with sullied words
With weapons drawn the hour before the first mate stirs

She weeps for what she's done
Six years and a hundred and one fears
For now we weep and wail
Perhaps this boat should pick its path and sail

Oceans of tears lapping at the ankles of civility
Place your swords at the ankles of civility

Swords down
Reveal yourselves, the jig is up
This armoury has had enough
As blades spoil, our hearts may mend
And aging men can kneel upon the soil again

Embrace your friends
And aging men can kneel upon the soil again
